How to choose the right rug for your room | Rugs for Sale

23rd Feb 2015

Picking a rug is hard. In fact, if you ask any interior designer or even homeowner what part of decorating a room is the trickiest, they’ll tell you picking the right rug is the most difficult. It’s also the bit most people get wrong, which is a shame because ill-chosen rugs can have disastrous effects on a room.

There are three things you have to consider when it comes to picking rugs and they are as follows:

  • Colour
  • Size
  • Style

The colour of your rug is all to do with your existing décor. If you have a lot of different colours and patterns in the room then it’s probably wise to stick to a single-colour rug within the same colour scheme – that should tie everything in together nicely. But don’t be afraid to go bold! Alternatively if you want a patterned rug with lots of colour and detail, it may be worth picking your rug first, and then build the rest of the room around it.

Size is probably where most people go astray with rugs. Stick to the rule that rugs should fill the entire seating area but not necessarily the whole room. Front legs of furniture should be on rugs NOT the floor.

The style of rugs is often overlooked in favour of colour and size which is a mistake. If you have smooth, sleek furniture then a shaggy rug can add contrast. Similarly, if you have a lot of different textures and fabrics I your furniture, a smooth, short pile rug can add some balance. It’s also worth noting that when it comes to rugs and style, practicality is important. Shaggy rugs are harder to clean and short pile rugs can be more hard wearing – if you have children for example.

And there you have it! Rugs for sale can be a big expenditure, so it’s worth taking the time to get your choice spot on!
